tech review: STRUCTURE
Sections that were presented to the consultant on Tuesday. Some notes to take away:
1) set up guidelines to dictate how far away to cantilever from a column support.
2) The floor slab under the atrium will be completely demo’d to accommodate for a new floor system called a raft system.
3) New structure can help existing structure maintain rigidity with the appropriate tie-backs, etc., to the existing slab.
… there were more morsels of wisdom, but i’m too tired to remember.
technical consultant week: here are some drawings i presented to the structural consultant: some 3d diagrams showing structure to remain, and the new structure i am inserting (the parasitic element). the idea is revolving around the idea of the building as a living machine; the old remnants of the factory building are going to be revived by the new, light, element, that will become the element that attracts people to the site. The new element contrasts with the old by being represented as a light, airy, technical structure as opposed to the rigid, thick, concrete structure of the existing Powell Square building.
